Intrapersonal and interpersonal competence includes identifying one’s talents, traits, goals, and values, and understanding how one’s personal characteristics affect perceptions of and interactions with others. Self-awareness, effective communication skills, and knowledge of group dynamics are essential to productive collaboration, conflict resolution, and the attainment of personal and professional goals.
Reasoned and ethical decision-making is characterized by an awareness of personal and group values, the consideration of multiple perspectives, and the realization that a single action may affect the larger community. This competency includes the ability to articulate the rationale for one’s behavior, the willingness to assume responsibility for personal conduct, and the maturity to respond appropriately to conflict.
Personal well-being includes identifying one’s emotional, physical, and spiritual needs. These needs are fulfilled by making safe and healthy choices that demonstrate an awareness and concern for the welfare of others.
Campus involvement is engagement beyond the classroom, exploring special interests, celebrating milestones, participating in positive campus traditions, and finding a place within the greater College community. Participation in student organizations, college events, and programs strengthens connections among students, builds a sense of community spirit, and produces lifelong memories. It includes seizing opportunities for experiences that provide leadership skills practice.
The visual and performing arts expose us to new ways of thinking and experiencing the world, including the appreciation of how cultures are expressed, how human beings communicate, and how solutions to problems may be achieved in unconventional ways. In addition to cultivating one’s artistic abilities, appreciation of the arts also can be achieved through valuing and supporting the creative expressions of others.
Multicultural competence refers to the development of the knowledge, awareness, and skills that enable positive interactions with others, regardless of differences of race, religion, sexual orientation, ethnic background, class, etc. This competence includes an awareness of the impact of cultural heritage on worldviews, values, and assumptions, and encourages a celebration of individual differences.
